Wedding dress alterationsSonia Fashion · Brisbane City
Evening gowns, cocktail dresses, suits and jackets adjusted through the shoulder, waist, sleeve and hem — so the line reads clean from across the room.
Evening · Sculpted drapeFormalwear is unforgiving. A jacket that sits a centimetre off at the shoulder, a gown that pulls at the bust, trousers that break badly over the shoe — the eye picks it up instantly, even when nobody can say why.
Sonia works on evening and cocktail dresses, race-day outfits, graduation and school formal gowns, business suits and dinner jackets. Shoulder work — the hardest and most valuable alteration in tailoring — is done properly rather than avoided.
If you have an event date, say so when you call. Formal season around Brisbane gets busy, and Sonia would rather book you in early than rush the work.
Where a suit is won or lost
Three adjustments do most of the work on tailoring. Two of them are routine. The third is the one most alteration shops decline.
If the shoulder is wrong, nothing below it can be made right. The seam should sit where your shoulder ends; a centimetre past it puts a divot under the collar that no amount of waist work will hide. Adjusting it means detaching the sleeve, reshaping the head and setting it back in — skilled, slow work, and the reason many shops say no. Sonia does it, and on an off-the-rack jacket it is usually the single change that makes the difference between bought and tailored.
Taking a jacket in through the side seams and back gives it shape through the middle. There is a limit: past a certain point the pockets and the vents start to sit wrong, and the jacket begins to look altered rather than fitted. Sonia will say where that line is for your garment.
Jacket sleeves should show roughly a centimetre of shirt cuff. Most are shortened from the cuff; a jacket with working buttonholes has to be shortened from the shoulder instead, which costs more and is worth knowing before you buy.
How the trouser sits on the shoe is a decision, not a default — no break, a slight break or a full one. Bring the shoes you will wear. Tapering through the leg is straightforward and usually does more for a modern silhouette than shortening alone.
Gowns are taken in through the bodice and side seams, hemmed to your shoes, and adjusted at the straps and neckline. Internal support — boning and cups — can be added or reset, which is what stops a strapless dress travelling through the night.
Debutante balls, school formals and the spring carnival all get busy, and all arrive at the same time every year. If your event is in formal season, book the fitting as soon as you have the dress rather than the fortnight before.
Altering a cheap suit will not make it a good suit — the cloth and the canvas are what they are. But a decent off-the-rack jacket, properly adjusted, will outdress an expensive one that doesn’t fit.

Common questions
Yes. Shoulder alteration is skilled work that many alteration shops decline, but it's often the single change that makes an off-the-rack jacket look tailored.
Usually a week to two weeks depending on the work and the season. Around school formal and race season, book earlier.
Often yes, but there's a limit — past a certain point the proportions of the garment itself stop working. Bring it in and Sonia will tell you honestly before you spend money on it.
Sometimes. Call the workroom on (07) 3211 5060 and ask — Sonia will tell you straight away whether it can be done properly in the time available.
Usually a size through the side seams and back. Beyond that the pockets and vents start to sit wrong and the jacket begins to look altered rather than fitted. Sonia will tell you where that limit is for your garment.
Three to four weeks is comfortable for most formal dresses. School formal and race season both get busy at the same time every year, so book the fitting as soon as you have the dress rather than the fortnight before.
Yes, always. Hem length and how the trouser breaks over the shoe depend entirely on the shoes you will actually wear with them.
