Dressmaking in Brisbane City

Ready-to-wear is cut to a statistical average. Made-to-measure starts from you: your proportions, your posture, how you actually move and what you're comfortable in.

The process begins with a conversation about the shape you want, the occasion and the fabric. Sonia will advise on what suits your frame and what a given cloth will actually do — drape, weight, structure and how it will wear.

Bring a picture, a sketch, or an old dress you love the fit of. Any of those is a perfectly good starting point.

What Sonia does

  • Made-to-measure dresses for occasions and everyday wear
  • Custom formal and evening pieces
  • Copying or reinterpreting a favourite garment
  • Fabric and construction advice
  • Toile and multiple fittings for complex pieces
  • Custom pieces for hard-to-fit proportions

How a commission runs

From a conversation
to a finished piece.

Made-to-measure is a process rather than a purchase. Here is what it involves, what it costs and how long to allow.

First, what you want

Bring a picture, a sketch, or a dress you already love the fit of — any of those is a good starting point, and the last one is often the best. The conversation covers the occasion, the shape you want, and what you are comfortable wearing, which is not always the same as what looks good on a hanger.

Fabric

You are welcome to bring your own cloth, and Sonia will tell you how much to buy before you shop — buying short is the most common and most expensive mistake. She will also tell you honestly what a given fabric will do: how it drapes, whether it holds structure, how it wears and whether it suits the shape you have in mind.

Measuring and the toile

For anything structured, a toile — a test version in cheap cloth — is made first. It is fitted on you and adjusted, and only then is the real fabric cut. It adds time, and it is the reason the finished piece fits.

Fittings and timing

Allow several weeks and two to three fittings for a structured garment; simpler pieces are faster. A schedule is agreed once the design is settled, so you know where things stand rather than waiting to hear.

What it costs

Dressmaking is priced on the work, not on a catalogue. The design, the fabric, the amount of internal structure and the number of fittings all move the number, so it is quoted once the design is agreed — before any cutting.

Hard-to-fit proportions

Made-to-measure earns its keep most for people the ready-to-wear size chart does not describe — a difference between top and bottom half, a long or short back, a bust that forces you to buy two sizes up. The garment is drafted to you, so none of that is a compromise.

If what you want would be better and cheaper as an alteration to something you already own, you will be told that too. See repairs and remodelling.

Common questions

Good to know
before you come in.

How long does a custom dress take?

Allow several weeks and multiple fittings for anything structured. Simpler pieces are faster. Sonia gives you a schedule once the design is agreed.

Do you supply the fabric?

You're welcome to bring your own fabric, and Sonia can advise on what to buy and how much you'll need before you shop.

Can you copy a dress I already own?

Often yes. Bring the garment in — Sonia will look at how it's constructed and tell you what's realistic.

How much does a custom-made dress cost in Brisbane?

It is priced on the work rather than from a catalogue — the design, the fabric, the internal structure and the number of fittings all change it. Sonia quotes once the design is agreed and before anything is cut.

How much fabric should I buy?

Ask before you shop. Sonia will tell you the yardage for your design and width, because buying short is the most common and most expensive mistake in a commission.

What is a toile and do I need one?

A toile is a test version made in cheap cloth, fitted on you and adjusted before the real fabric is cut. Anything structured needs one — it adds time, and it is the reason the finished garment fits.
