Wedding dress alterationsMeet the owner
An independent, female-owned workroom in Brisbane City — built one fitting, one garment and one exacting standard at a time.
Independent · Female-ownedSonia was fourteen when she began sewing on her own — not as a hobby picked up and put down, but as something she kept returning to. What held her was a question most people never think to ask: why one seam falls beautifully and an identical one, a centimetre away, does not.
She spent the years that followed chasing the answer around the world. At times she gave her work away for nothing, simply for the chance to stand beside someone who was better than her and watch how they did it. That habit never really stopped. Forty years on, she still treats a garment as something to learn from.
It buys the ability to look at a garment on a hanger and know, before it is tried on, where it will pull and what can be done about it. It buys the confidence to adjust a jacket shoulder — the hardest alteration in tailoring, and the one most workrooms decline. It buys the judgement to say this one isn’t worth altering and mean it, which costs her the job and saves you the money.
Thousands of uniforms have passed through her hands over that career, alongside wedding gowns, black-tie dresses, leather, and the ordinary clothes people wear every day. The standard does not change with the garment.
Sonia Fashion is an independent, female-owned workroom on Level 3 at 141 Queen Street, in the middle of Brisbane City. It is a quiet room above a busy street, which is roughly how the work gets done.
Seamstress, dressmaker, tailor, alterations specialist — people use different words for this trade, and Sonia does all of it. One of her Google reviews puts the shortage plainly: “A good seamstress is so very difficult to find.”
In a trade that has mostly been replaced by replacement, the workroom runs slowly and deliberately. Every client is fitted in person. Nothing is cut until the shape is right. Customers have driven down from the Sunshine Coast to have a hem done here, and some have been coming back for the better part of a decade.
